Historic Belmont Mansion and Underground Railroad 4th of July Open House Celebration and Family Day

Belmont Mansion

Where:
2000 Belmont Mansion Drive Philadelphia PA 19131
When:
  • Wednesday July 4th 2012

The American Women’s Heritage Society at Historic Belmont Mansion sponsors the July 4th Open House. Experience an Underground Railroad Exhibition and tour of the Revolutionary Era home of Judge Richard Peters, Secretary of the War Board for General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The tour also features costumed student re-enactors from Belmont Mansion’s adopted school, Global Leadership Academy. Trained tour guides will provide a lively and colorful recounting of historical events and people from Philadelphia’s past.

Belmont Mansion's interactive exhibits are giving visitors a unique and unforgettable experience with real history told in a 21st century way. Visitors will experience new and exciting technology driven audio narratives that share authentic stories at a touch of a button. You will explore maps and timelines while walking through one of the nation’s first example of Palladian Style architecture.

The Open House is intergenerational and families are encouraged to bring children, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and friends for a fun filled and relaxing day at an authentic Underground Railroad site. Bring the family and enjoy a day of fun. There will be face painting, games, cultural dance ensemble, gifts and crafts, raffles and prizes, music, the Freedom Choir of Philadelphia, free popcorn and hot dogs.

Hear the stories of escape and freedom via the Underground Railroad. Learn how Judge Richard Peters purchased the enslaved young woman named Cornelia Wells and her child, and how he set them free. Walk the gardens where George Washington once strolled and planted a tree. A nationally recognized Underground Railroad site, Belmont Mansion is a Network to Freedom member and an affiliate of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
