Marilyn Nonken Performs Morton Feldman's Triadic Memories (Part of the American Sublime Festival)

615 N. Broad Street Philadelphia PA 19123
  • Saturday June 4th 2011

American Sublime opens in the resonant, visually sumptuous, Moorish-style chapel at Congregation Rodeph Sholom. (Secular in outlook, Feldman nonetheless remarked that he wanted to be “the first great composer who is Jewish.”) Feldman’s 94-minute "Triadic Memories" (1981) is performed by pianist Marilyn Nonken, who has earned praise for her recording on Mode Records. Feldman described this work, possessed of a stately unease, as “a conscious attempt at ‘formalizing’ a disorientation of memory.” Marilyn Nonken is one of the most celebrated champions of the modern repertoire of her generation, known for performances that explore transcendent virtuosity and extremes of musical expression.
