Originally formed in 2002 by Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser while they were attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut, MGMT was signed to Columbia Records in 2006 and released its debut album, Oracular Spectacular, in 2008. In November 2007, Rolling Stone named MGMT one of the Top 10 bands to watch in 2008. NME's year-end Best of 2008 poll named Oracular Spectacular the No. 1 Album of the Year, with the album's singles holding down three of the year's Top 5 Singles spots, including "Kids" as No. 1 Single of the Year, "Time To Pretend" at No. 4 and "Electric Feel" at No. 5. NME went on to name "Time To Pretend" the No. 2 Single of the Decade.
As a result of its debut success, MGMT was nominated for 2010 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocals for "Kids." The group continued its success with its second studio release, 2010's Congratulations, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, as well as topped the Digital Albums, Alternative Albums and Rock Albums charts.
