    Grounds for Sculpture

    Where
    80 Sculptor's Way, Hamilton, NJ 08619

Grounds For Sculpture, a non-profit organization supported by a public charitable foundation, has become recognized as a leading showcase for contemporary sculpture since its inaugural exhibition in 1992. Its site was formerly a part of the New Jersey State Fairgrounds. The two museum buildings, each 10,000 square feet, provide indoor spaces for seasonally changing one-person and group exhibitions. They were originally state fair exhibit halls built in the 1920s and 40s that have been renovated and modernized to provide open, light-filled galleries while maintaining the integrity of the original structures. The surrounding flat, barren grounds were extensively reconfigured and landscaped. Thousands of rose bushes, rhododendrons and other flowering shrubs, along with multiple varieties of ornamental grasses and evergreen and deciduous trees, were planted to form a serene, arboretum-like park. This verdant setting forms the background approximately 200 large-scale contemporary sculptures, ranging stylistically from geometric abstraction to life-like figurative representations, and executed in either traditional media or more recently adapted industrial materials. By prominent and emerging American and international artists, some pieces are in the sculpture park's growing collection, while others are on loan for terms of at least one year.
