This class will discuss the traditional meanings and uses of the African sculpture collected by Dr. Albert C. Barnes.
We will also consider the impact of colonialism and imperialism which resulted in the dissemination of African material culture and popularized the cultures that are represented in the Barnes collection.
Each week, the main lecture is followed by a 30-minute discussion session that allows students the opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas with the instructor and classmates.
