The term “post-impressionism” was first used by a critic in 1910 to describe the various artistic styles that emerged in France in the decades after impressionism. This course zooms in on key post-impressionist paintings in the Barnes collection—works by Seurat, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Gauguin—to explore the divergent directions of the Parisian avant-garde during the closing decades of the 19th century. The journey will take us from an artist’s studio in Paris, to the rocky landscapes of Provence, to the tropical island of Tahiti.
