Instructor Ramon Townsend has adapted his flagship Hand Bookbinding Level I workshop to introduce you to the traditional methods of creating a book all from the comfort and safety of your own home. These bookbinding methods have been employed from about the first century through the mid-19th-century.
You will hand-sew the book sections (signatures); secure the hard covers; add a leather spine, and decorative paper to the covers; and lay down the endpapers in this process. Workshops are conducted virtually via GOOGLE MEET. All participants must have access to Google Meet and a computer, tablet or smartphone with a camera to take part.
Historic Sugartown’s in-person and virtual workshops are taught by Ramon Townsend, who studied hand bookbinding under the Master and Journeymen bookbinders at Colonial Williamburg. Ramon has practiced bookbinding, marbling, and rebinding/restoring used and rare books for four decades, and offers book repair and rebinding services through his busines.
