Europe-based, Company Wang Ramirez makes its Philadelphia debut with Monchichi, an award-winning dance theater work fusing hip hop, contemporary, ballet, tango and martial arts. It is performed and choreographed by artistic directors Honji Wang, a classically-trained German born dancer of Korean descent and Sebastien Ramirez, a Frenchman, B-Boy and hip hop virtuoso who are partners in life and on stage.
Monchichi creates a stunning portrait of an urban, mobile and intercultural couple. Tanz calls it “ Tanztheater at its best … living poetry.” Set to music composed by Everdayz with selections from Carlos Gardel, Alva Noto and Nick Cave, the sparse twinkling tree set suggests a 21st century Garden of Eden.
Wang/Ramirez choreographed for Madonna’s 2015-16 Rebel Heart tour. The Company has performed at Théâtre de la Ville, La Villette and Théâtre National de Chaillot (Paris), Sadler’s Wells (London), Apollo Theater (New York), and Mercat de les Flors (Barcelona).
