The Legend of the White Snake

    Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society

450 Keebler Road, King of Prussia, PA 19406
    • Saturday October 12th 2019, 2:00pm to 5:00pm

It’s a story of the heart wrenching love between a snake deity and a mortal man across the boundaries of nature and time. Live orchestra accompaniment and subtitles in English and Chinese are provided throughout.

After a thousand years of practice, White Snake comes down the mountain. She transfers herself into a beautiful lady. At the West Lake White Snake (Bai) falls in love with a young man Xu Xian. Abbot Fahai of Jinshan Temple comes to warn Xu that his wife and her maid are snake spirits. Xu dies of shock when Bai reveals her snake form. Bai obtains a magic herb that restores Xu’s life. Fahai comes again to put Bai under the Thunder Peak Pagoda.

The struggle for freedom and the pursuit of happiness is timeless. Lessons of tolerance and inclusion still need be taught. Directed by Artistic Director Shuyuan Li, this production features a new generation of artists trained by Ms. Li. It echoes the one 13 years ago in which Ms. Li played the title role. The baton has been passed on!
