Yoga Nidra (or yogic sleep) is a state of consciousness between being awake and being asleep. The practitioner is laying on the floor supported with a yoga bolster and a blanket feeling completely relaxed while following a set of verbal instructions to become systematically and increasingly aware of their inner world.
Yoga Nidra is the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness in contrast to sleeping where dreaming can occur with little or no awareness of ones actual environment. The practice of Yoga Nidra has been found to reduce tension and anxiety. Once the Yoga Nidra practice is complete the practitioner will be left feeling alert, refreshed, and calm. Yoga Nidra is like taking a 3 hour nap, but without the groggy feeling after you wake.
