Philadelphia-based photographer Jiaqi Pan’s work combines repetitive structures with strikingly empathetic portraits, resulting in a series that challenges viewers to look more closely at the spaces they encounter every day. In her 2016 series "Drive-Thru," Pan photographed women of color framed within the windows of fast-food delivery lanes. The idiosyncratic character of Pan’s subjects undermines the uniformity of the spaces, thereby compelling the viewer to consider the individuals behind this corporate production of food. In focusing on the women of color who often work in drive-thru restaurants, Pan’s photography insists upon their visibility within the otherwise homogenizing space of industrial food production. - Olivia Gruber Florek, curator
