Manuscript drafts, blue-lines and mock-ups, paste-ups, galleys and proofs–this exhibition reminds viewers of nearly forgotten literary formats that are no longer part of contemporary computer-driven writing and publishing practices.

This Fall 2019 exhibition draws from UD Special Collections’s rich literary archives to show how manuscripts emerge from an author’s mind and materialize through publication for the reader’s consumption. Original drafts; editorial revisions; the mechanics of publishing; marketing plans; critical reception; and collaborations with illustrators, designers and printers are explored through the works of Donald Barthelme, Jane Bowles, Truman Capote, Emily Coleman, Samuel Delany, Alice Dunbar Nelson, Ernest Hemingway, Ishmael Reed, W.D. Snodgrass, Ben Yagoda and more.
