Anchored by a beautifully restored 1892 railway station, the 2.5-mile Pemberton Rail Trail owes its existence to a dedication of the Pemberton Rotary Club who was responsible for the planning and developing of the trail. The Pemberton Trail is not very long, but is rich in history and a perfect destination for railroad enthusiasts. Begin at the historic station, located on Hanover Street in Pemberton, which functions as a regional history museum. Learn about the stunning building, which was built to replace an earlier station which burnt in 1891, and was operational until rail service ended in 1969. The museum holds many fascinating historical objects related to the railroad, including old rail cars, as well as information about the local cranberry and blueberry industries, in addition serving as a welcome center for both the Pinelands and Pemberton area. From here head out on the 1.6 mile crushed stone trail that was once the corridor for rail service between the town and nearby Camden. The setting is quite bucolic and the tree-line route is a popular destination for walkers, cyclists (road bikes are not recommended) as well cross-country skiers.
The Pemberton Rail Trail is a part of the Circuit Trails, a vast regional network of hundreds of miles of multi-use trails that is growing in size each year. Explore 100s of miles of happy at CircuitTrails.org.
The trail is open from dawn to dusk.
