Bowdoin College Museum of Art Curator Frank Goodyear will discuss the exhibition Winslow Homer: Photography and the Art of Painting in the gallery.Free with Museum admission

Winslow Homer: Photography and the Art of Painting examines the role the relatively new medium of photography played in the evolving practice of one of America’s most iconic artists. During the last three decades of his life, Homer often created compositions of the same subject in different mediums including painting, printmaking and photography.

His use of various media came from his interest in probing the way things look and the challenge of portraying them realistically. Homer often borrowed certain elements—the cropping, the blur of the background and the flatness of the composition—from photographic convention, yet his painting, based on unique optical experiences, was an artistic creation reflective of myriad decisions.

The entire museum is wheelchair accessible, including bathrooms, water fountains and the museum café.

Accessible parking for vehicles displaying the appropriate disability permits is located on the far right side of the parking lot alongside the river, available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a designated barrier-free entrance into the Museum's lower level, located at the entrance alongside the river, to the right of the main entrance and close to the accessible parking.

The Museum has several standard-sized, non-motorized wheelchairs available at no cost for visitor convenience. Service animals are welcome in the museum. Please check in at the Admissions desk in the Visitor Entrance upon arrival. Advance notice is recommended for special tours or accommodations.
