The 2-mile Uwchlan Trail is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying a short, but tranquil route. Winding its way alongside Shamona Creek as it crisscrosses the waterway five times, this relatively narrow, but paved trail, is lightly traveled. The Uwchlan intersects with the 2.6-mile Struble Trail at the Dowlin Forge Road, but unlike the Struble, which is flat, the Uwchlan has several small hills. Heading in this direction, the trail has a slight downhill as it follows alongside Shamona Creek. Travel along a quiet forested route alive with nature and on a hot day stop to cool off in the refreshing creek waters. Along the way keep a lookout for remnants of the region’s iron heritage in the form of ruins from the forges and mills that once dotted the landscape, including an old spring house, a dam from the late 1700s and a mill. Stop to read the descriptive plaques at these sites and learn more about the region’s history. The trail ends at the intersection of Pennypacker and Milford Roads. Plans call for eventually extending the Uwchlan and connecting to additional, short segments of the trail that already exist, which combined with the Struble, would create a loop to the Chester Valley Trail via Exton Park.
The Uwchlan Trail is a part of the Circuit Trails, a vast regional network of hundreds of miles of multi-use trails that is growing in size each year. Explore 100s of miles of happy at CircuitTrails.org.
