Frank Langfitt served as NPR’s China correspondent for five years, reporting on such varied topics as the government’s notorious detention centers and the Beijing Olympics, for which his team won the Edward R. Murrow Award for sports reporting. Currently NPR’s London correspondent, he formerly served as organization’s East Africa correspondent, the Baltimore Sun’s reporter in Beijing, and worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer. In The Shanghai Free Taxi, Langfitt immerses himself in the real China by driving a cab for several years, offering free rides in exchange for his passengers’ stories.
He meets a motley cast of characters who anecdotally illustrate a country experiencing sea changes in politics and economics.
