Art Blakey Centennial - Messenger Legacy

Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts

    Where:
3680 Walnut Street, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA 19104
    When:
    • Saturday November 16th 2019, 8:00pm to 9:30pm

A reunion and tribute to a true jazz icon. Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers was a quintessential band for nearly 40 years, with a constant influx of only the best young musicians. Now, multiple generations of the group's elite alumni come together to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Blakey's birth and the legacy he created by providing a life-changing apprenticeship for over 200 jazz musicians.

With band members Bobby Watson, Essiet Essiet, Geoffrey Keezer, Brian Lynch and Bill Pierce, this top-notch ensemble is led by Ralph Peterson, the only drummer ever to play in the band alongside the drum maestro himself.

How to Enter the Annenberg Center:

If you are not able to utilize stairs, walk through the plaza with poster cases across from the Inn at Penn on Walnut St. between 36th and 37th Sts. At the foot of the staircase, there is a double-door ADA accessible entrance. Ring the bell for assistance. You will be greeted by an usher at the door who will show you to the elevator and take you to your seat. This entrance is for ADA patrons only. If your mobility is extremely limited, please call ahead for assistance. ADA patrons will be seated once the house opens. Only one companion per patron may accompany the patron during escort. All others will be required to enter the house through the main entrance.

We provide complimentary admission for government-funded or paid personal care attendants (PCAs) whose attendance is required to enable those with severe disabilities (i.e. individuals requiring around-the-clock assistance) to attend events. Depending on the event and the location of the ticketed patron's seat, the PCA will either be provided a seat or will be directed to a location nearby where they can stand (which may or may not include a view of the event). Any request for a complimentary PCA admission must be made when purchasing the patron's ticket by calling the Box Office at 215.898.3900.

Large print programs are available for the visually impaired. Please see the house manager upon arrival at the Annenberg Center to receive a large print program.

For patrons with hearing impairments, listening devices are available in the lobby of the theatre from the house manager. We utilize Listen Technologies LR-300 Portable Digital RF Receiver devices. Simply reserve your assisted listening device when you place your order over the phone or at the Box Office. Upon arrival at the Annenberg Center, please see the house manager to receive your assisted listening device. A photo ID is required.
