    Kulu Mele African Dance & Drum Ensemble

    Founded by Baba Robert Crowder in 1969, Kulu Mele is known for infusing authentic African dance with urban American flair. The company has been guided by Artistic Director Dorothy Wilkie for more than 20 years.

     

    This dynamic dance troupe has been a vital part of the City's cultural fabric for more than 40 years and has performed at the region's most prestigious venues, including the Kimmel Center, the Mann Center, Penn’s Landing, The Painted Bride Art Center and the University of Pennsylvania.

     

    Lela Aisha Jones and Deneane Richburg co-founded The Requisite Movers in 2010 to produce the works of Black female choreographers and performance artists. The first production was presented in the 2010 Philly Fringe Festival.
