Visit one of the region’s most unique environments and learn about carnivorous plants, cranberry and blueberry farming, and more! Our guide for the day will be Mark Szutarski, who describes himself as a weekend botanist and who led an entertaining and informative Scott Arboretum Pine Barrens trip last fall. This June’s trip would be great for anyone interested in unusual plants, interesting habitats, and Pine Barrens history. If you enjoyed last year’s trip, you won’t want to miss visiting some new locations and seeing the local plants at a different time of year. Our first stop will be a walk around Pakim Pond, where Mark will talk about carnivorous plants and the area’s other native plants. Next, we’ll head to Whitesbog, a historic area known for its cranberry farms and its crucial role in developing the cultivars and knowledge needed to get blueberries started as a commercial crop. Then, we’ll head to Webbs Mill, where there are pinelands and a boardwalk leading into the wetlands.
