Like a comet burning far too bright to last, Janis Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became an iconic rock ‘n’ roll queen. Her unmistakable voice, laced with raw emotion and Southern Comfort, made her the must-see “rock mama” from Monterey to Woodstock. Fueled by a live band and psychedelic performances of her unforgettable songs “Piece of my Heart,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and “Cry Baby,” A Night with Janis Joplin is a powerful celebration of Janis, and her musical inspirations—including Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith. Break out those bell bottoms and put on your dancing shoes—this electric musical event will bring down the house!

A team of professionally certified ASL interpreters provide a sign language-interpreted performance, in addition to a pre-show overview and introduction to the play.

Sensory Seminars are held 90 minutes before each Audio Described/ASL interpreted performance, allowing patrons the opportunity to walk through the set, touch set pieces, feel costume textures, and handle key props. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Email Access Coordinator Janet Dickson at for details.

We have installed brand new assistive listening equipment in both our theaters. Both stages are now outfitted with dedicated microphones allowing patrons to gain a clear interpretation of the action taking place on stage when you reserve a pocket-sized FM radio.

Patrons who already wear a T-coil equipped hearing device can sync their earpiece to the receiver to improve sound quality.

If you are utilizing listening-assistance when you visit McCarter, please let us know about your experience. See a Front of House manager or email to share your thoughts. We are all ears!

Spoken dialogue scrolls across a digital screen as the action occurs on stage. The caption unit is visible to the entire audience but is located in an unobtrusive position near the stage.

A relaxed performance is one that has been adapted to provide a relaxed and safe environment for individuals with autism, learning differences, or other sensory and communication needs so that they and their families may enjoy live theater together. The quality of the production still aligns with McCarter's high artistic standards, but small adjustments are made to certain technical elements (such as sound and light cues). In addition, at a relaxed performance, professional staff members from our partner organizations are on hand to assist parents and caregivers, a family restroom is available, and there are be designated activity and relaxation areas in the lobby.
